Angel Gowns

Angel Gowns are burial clothes for infants who have passed away either at birth or shortly after. The gowns are made by volunteers and given to local hospitals, so the staff will have something lovely to offer a grieving family, many of whom are not prepared for the tragedy of infant loss. The goal is to help a family through something unimaginable and offer love and support in any way possible.

What makes these super special gowns even more special is that they are usually made from donated wedding dresses. Volunteers deconstruct the gowns use the various elements to make something beautiful.

There are several official chapters, websites, and groups around the U.S. I am not affiliated with any official group, though I am part of the support group on Facebook run by 7 Pines Design, who developed the pattern most of the gowns are made from.

I became interested in Angel Gowns when my nephew passed away unexpectedly at three days old. Back then, I didn't have the time or the skill to make them, but now, hopefully, I do.

Here is my first attempt, made from a confirmation dress donated by my daughter. The bodice and the underskirt are made from material from her dress and the rest is cotton with lace applique. It's been so gratifying to make. I have already been given four wedding dresses and I'll post progress as I go. I plan to have a dozen or so before I donate them to one of my area NICUs, but I've already be in touch with one of the directors, and they are excited.
